Planning a website - Activ Web Design

Planning a New Business Website?

Planning

If you haven’t done it already decide on a domain name, keep it as short and as memorable as you can and include keywords if possible.

Carefully map out your ideas on paper, work out how many pages you need (don’t forget you will need to create quality content for them), also, how the navigation will be structured to get to each page.

Internal linking, you should link to other pages on your website to allow the search engines to crawl the site

Holding Page

Create a “Coming Soon” page on your domain with your contact details.

Content

You know what pages you need now start creating the content, as they say “Content is king” the search engines love quality content, make sure it is relevant to the page, is informative and is unique copying someone else’s content won’t do you any good.

Calls to action

No matter how good your content is you need calls to action, now that they have read your content and like what they see give the user a way of contacting you or buying your products. Place calls to action on every page if possible. Even a “Sign Up For Our Newsletter” will feed visitors into your sales funnel.

On-Page SEO

All your webpages should be optimised for the search engines, this isn’t just optimising your content but also adding all of the relevant metadata, schema mark-up and “og” tags. Think about the text in the meta-description as Search engines will use this when displaying the SERPS.

Analytics

Make sure your website has analytics installed, tools such as Google Analytics will help you work out how well your website is doing, which pages get the most visitors and which pages are ineffective. Values such as bounce rate tell you how good your content is or whether the user found what they were looking for when they entered their search phrase.

HTTPS

Make sure you add an SSL Certificate not only is it a security measure by encrypting the data going between the server and client but Google also uses it as a ranking factor.

Redirects

If you are rebuilding a site on an existing domain and have made any URL changes or removed pages you need to use 301 redirects to point users to the correct location on your new website. It tells search engines where the old information has been moved to.
